Optical Module Market Outlook: What AI Data Center Spending Means for Buyers
This article is currently available in English. A translated version is in preparation.

The structural shift

For most of the last decade, optical module demand was driven by two things: telecom network builds and general-purpose cloud data center refresh cycles. Both are relatively predictable and both are dominated by mid-range speeds.

AI compute has changed the shape of the demand curve. Training clusters need very high port counts at very high speeds, concentrated in a small number of very large deployments. The result is demand concentrating at the high end — 400G and above — while the mid-range continues at a steadier pace.

What this means for lead times

High-end capacity is finite. When a small number of very large buyers absorb the output of the leading suppliers, the effect on everyone else is longer lead times and firmer allocation at the high end.

Practical implication: for 400G and 800G class optics, plan procurement further ahead than you did three years ago. Placing orders at the point of need is no longer safe for high-speed parts. For 10G, 25G and 40G classes, supply is far more stable and normal procurement cycles still work.

Technology migration: what to plan for

| Speed class | Status | Buyer action | |---|---|---| | 1.25G – 10G | Mature, stable supply | Standard procurement | | 25G | Mature, high volume | Standard procurement | | 40G | Declining but supported | Buy for existing installs only | | 100G | Mainstream | Standard procurement, watch allocation | | 400G | Growing fast | Longer lead time planning | | 800G | Ramping | Early engagement with suppliers | | 1.6T | Early | Monitor; do not build around |

Supply chain considerations

  1. Concentration risk. High-speed optical module production is concentrated among a limited number of suppliers. A single supplier is a single point of failure for a build schedule.
  2. Component-level constraints. Lasers, DSPs and certain optical components have their own lead times, which can be longer than the module assembly time.
  3. Second-source qualification takes time. Qualifying an alternate part number in a live network takes weeks to months. Start before you need it, not after a delay appears.

What a buyer should do this quarter

  1. Map your 12-month optical requirement by speed class, and flag anything at 400G or above.
  2. Engage suppliers early on high-speed parts — before the procurement process formally starts.
  3. Qualify a second source for your top five part numbers, even if you do not split the order today.
  4. Keep 10G and 25G on normal cycles. There is no reason to over-order stable, mature parts.
  5. Check the compatibility and coding requirements of any new platform before you commit to a large order.

Canjin Technology supplies the full speed range from 155M to 400G. For planning discussions, our team will provide indicative lead times by part number on request.
