400G QSFP-DD vs OSFP: Which Form Factor Should You Design Around?

400G QSFP-DD vs OSFP: Which Form Factor Should You Design Around?
This article is currently available in English. A translated version is in preparation.

The core difference

Both QSFP-DD and OSFP deliver 400G over eight electrical lanes. The physical design is where they diverge:

  • QSFP-DD keeps the QSFP family footprint. It is backward compatible with QSFP28 and QSFP+ ports in the sense that it can be inserted into them at lower speeds, which makes it attractive for mixed-generation chassis.
  • OSFP is physically larger. The extra volume is used for a taller heat sink, giving it more thermal headroom per module.

That single difference — thermal headroom — drives most of the real-world decision.

Where each one wins

Choose QSFP-DD when:

  • You need density. More QSFP-DD ports fit on a faceplate than OSFP ports.
  • You are mixing 100G and 400G on the same chassis line cards.
  • Your optics stay in the 400G class for the foreseeable fleet lifetime.

Choose OSFP when:

  • You are planning an 800G upgrade path on the same physical port.
  • Per-port power dissipation is high enough that heat, not density, is the limiting factor.
  • Your switch vendor's 400G/800G line card uses OSFP cages.

Reach classes for 400G

| Class | Reach | Fiber | Typical use | |---|---|---|---| | DR4 | 500 m | Single-mode, MPO | Within-hall spine | | FR4 | 2 km | Single-mode, duplex LC | Cross-hall, campus | | LR4 | 10 km | Single-mode, duplex LC | DCI, inter-building |

The decision rule that avoids rework

Ask one question first: will this port need to run 800G during the life of this switch? If yes, and your vendor supports it, OSFP gives you a cleaner upgrade. If no, QSFP-DD's density usually wins on cost per port.

Do not decide on reach classes at the same time as form factor — they are independent choices. A DR4 in QSFP-DD and a DR4 in OSFP use the same fiber and cover the same distance.

Canjin Technology supplies 400G QSFP-DD modules in DR4, FR4 and LR4 variants with full optical specifications published per part number.
